Update One Launch Day writeup, press links, Vale video, Xiloscient video

Hi everyone!  Well, Wednesday was quite the busy day for Turbine and DDO.  Tons of goings-on...

First up, Update One went live to the servers in the U.S. yesterday just a little less than an hour after originally projected.  Turbine's update seemed to go quite well in terms of the patch itself - few problems reported by people updating the new content and getting into the game.  That's not to say that there weren't problems.....

But I digress:  I wanted to alert European players through Codemasters that we have word from DNote about when Update One would be coming to their servers:

We're aiming for the 5th, but we still have some significant testing to do on it before we can lock down the date.

Okay, so first up, Turbine was forced to temporarily shut down The Shroud raid due to a pretty significant bug that I'm sure will be fixed soon.  The problem is people getting stuck after taking the portal between parts 2 and 3 of the raid.

Also, there was an unintended nerf to seeker items (not including the Bloodstone, at least, and maybe not including most raid items.)  Apparently, +10 seeker items went down to +8, +8 to +7, etc.  DDO Lead Developer Eladrin writes on the DDO.com boards today that the change is, "...unintentional" and will be looked at.

Additionally, a few things that were on Lammania did not make it to Update One.  Reincarnation is out for additional work, as previously described by Fernando Paiz in a letter earlier this week that can be found in a lower post on DDOcast.com here.  The ability to purchase Veteran Status (start at level 4) and expand your shared bank by ten additional slots through the DDO Store was placed in the Release Notes in error, according to Tolero.  Apparently, it's part of the features discussed in Fernando Paiz' letter this week that are being released between updates, or as part of their faster rollout effort.  Tolero also writes that the new hair styles were,

"...pushed out to the next patch due to some gender issues. They shall return!"

One big thing for us VIP's (and I think it's cool, sorry to F2P players who aren't paying a mere $10/month for this excellent game):  We have the new high level quests to ourselves until Friday.  I'm not sure when the switch gets flipped and everyone can come in, but if you see it in the DDO Store, you can run it if you can buy it.  I think I will put together another post soon to give an overview of The Path of Inspiration, so stay tuned.  I believe it's 495 points.

Missing Turbine Points?

You'll want to read this.  Here is officially the latest word from Turbine for the DDO subscribers who are missing their monthly Turbine Points.  Turbine's Marketroid writes on the DDO.com boards today:

We're very aware of the points distribution issue that's impacting someplayers. It's the number one priority for our billing and serviceplatform team and has been since it was uncovered. Unfortunately, thisis a complex system and the number of new and returning players we'veseen since launch has further complicated our attempts to fix it.

Right now our planned course of action is twofold:

1. Credit missing points to any players who have lost them.
2. Make sure that automated grants are happening properly on an ongoing basis

I apologize to everyone who's had a problem with this. We clearly hadissues with this system that didn't manifest during beta. We're workingdiligently on the issue and will not rest until it's resolved.

We don't yet have an ETA for when the issue will be completely resolved. When there's more information we'll share it.

Thanks for your patience as we work through this.

I have had no problems whatsoever getting my TP on time, but there have been a bunch of folks reporting problems, so it's good that they are working on this.  I also thought I'd add here this bit 'o' info from the Turbine Account Support page on DDO.com.  This is where you should call/email to get this resolved:

My personal opinion is that Turbine has had some either software or third-party issues that are causing this, although an exact cause has not been stated by the company.

Ahhhh, the Tomes, the tombs they are a'callinnn.....

Big change to the 'ol tomes today with the release of Update One.  Tarrant writes:

Update 1 comes with a retroactive change to existing tomes that we want to make sure you are aware of.

From the Known Issues:
In order to support reincarnation, all tomes will now have a minimumlevel associated with them. If you use a tome with no minimum leveldisplayed before you are eligible, the benefits of that tome will begradually applied as you reach the appropriate levels.

For example: If you use a +2 tome at level 1, you'll receive the firststat point at level 3, and the second stat point at level 7.

Reincarnation is not yet in-game and will be available in the future, but this change was made now in order to lay the foundation. Sorry forany inconvenience, and thanks for your understanding!

So, folks like Samius who had collected a whole bunch of +2 Intelligence tomes to gather skill points on their newly-rolled characters and the like are finding themselves unable to receive the benefits of their old (or recently purchased at a high price on the Auction House) tomes right away.  Tolero writes on DDO.com today:

The tome change was not intentional, and is the result of a bug.Unfortunately it's not one that we can fix due to complications withreincarnation. The only bright side to the dark cloud is it allows youto receive the benefits over time rather than just not at all (example:a +4 tome tome with no minimum level will grant the bonus over time themoment you are eligible for each of the stat increases, rather thanmaking you wait for any bonus at all until you were the min levelrequired for +4).

Later, she adds:

Originally this was supposed to be covered in our reincarnationchatter, but when reincarnation got pushed out, so too did thediscussion about this that's my bad. When I was going through the KIs from another thread Irealized that it didn't make it in >< so I'll go ahead andhighlight some of that here:

There is no way for us to predict WHEN you would eat a tome. When youlesser/greater reincarnate, we have to assign your tome to some pointin time. There's no way for us to predict that you would want to useyour tome at the level that you did. Maybe you looted your tome waylate and ate it as a higher level character because that's when you gotaccess to it. There's not a way for the system to go "ah I see that nowthat you're reincarnating, and had a +2 tome that you used in your lastlife at level X, you are destined to eat that tome at level Y to getthe most skill points when you take that level of [class] at level Z".We had to standardize the tomes so the reincarnation NPCs canpredictably apply the stat bonus.

We also wished to give more equality to the benefits of tomes - by thebook, a +2 Intelligence tome eaten at level 5 is significantly morepowerful than one that was eaten at level 15 due to the additionalskill points. By "phasing tomes in" - +1 at level 3, +2 at level 7, +3at level 11, +4 at level 15, and +5 at level 19, we level the playingfield and give people a way to retroactively gain skill points fortomes eaten late.

We had planned on not changing the old tomes to be impacted by minlevel, but they got sucked into mix by virtue of the reincarnation. Wecan't predict that you are going to eat a no-min-level tome but NOTreincarnate. We can't say "sorry you can't reincarnate because you atea non-min-level tome" either.

These were things originally meant to be covered in the dev diary butthe dev diary got delayed due to the feature push, and I missed addingit to the KI so that is totally my bad.

Also note that even though reincarnation is not available for you toaccess because we're still working on it, the code for it is still inthe game atm. We've just suppressed it so you can't access it becauseit's not yet in a state where it's ready for mass consumption. Thus theitems are being affected by the changes because the changes ARE there, you just can't access them.

Lead Developer Eladrin writes:

Specifically, the suppression of inherent bonuses for low levelcharacters was not intended to go live with Update 1, and was supposedto be tied to when Reincarnation hits the servers. At the same time asthat, old no-ML tomes were going to be given minimum levels to matchnewly dropped tomes - we were planning on covering all of this in aseries of reincarnation articles and explaining what's going to happenrather than springing it on you as a surprise.

Currently, you can eat a no-ML tome on a low level character and theeffect will be suppressed until you reach level 3, at which point thecharacter will gain a +1 Inherent bonus to the ability score. At level7, you will upgrade to a +2 (if it was a +2 tome), and so on. This isundesirable because there's no feedback at this time. ("I at a tome andnothing happened!")

Seems fine to me.

Quick note from Tolero about people trying to get their Veteran Status working (it's available through 1000 favor as well as through the store):

You also have to make sure that before you try it, you've logged inwith a character who specifically has more than 1000 favor, then logout and create the new character, enter the game with the newcharacter, end up on boat as level 1 and the NPCs walk you through thesteps to be 4.

I've been too busy today to actually get in game, but was able to patch up with no problem.  Update One is full of great content, hope you are enjoying it!  My video preview of The Path of Inspiration can be found on DDOcast.com here too.

Turbine Releases Vale of Twilight Promo Video:

The latest video from Turbine's adventure pack promo series, the Vale of Twilight.  Which, incidentally, is not currently available because of an unanticipated bug with the release of Update One.  Still, I like it!
