DDOcast Episode 20 (June 16th, 2007)
Hello everyone - DDOcast Episode 20 is now available! This week's episode takes a look at Welcome Back Weekend II along with the latest news. The show also features cool stuff from Xiloscient with "Xilo's Quick Tip of the Week" and Doctor Boutrous with "Ask Doctor Boutrous".
You can find the episode to the right - just select it from the Episode List. However, here's the DIRECT LINK.
Ahem....darn it. Yes, I screwed up the intro to the episode - just ignore it. It's just a few seconds of me speaking out of turn. That's what happens when you mess up multi-track audio editing and accidentally click twice to import a section of the show, and then proceed not to listen to the introduction during your pre-check. Oops! The time and effort it would take to pull out the rss feed (while it's being uploaded to various aggregators), redo the episode, repost it, redo the rss feed, etc just isn't worth it. Would cause more problems than it's worth. Sorry!
UPDATE (Tuesday morning): Just want to spread the good word that I was able to log in last night and play with no problems whatsoever. Looks like Turbine got things working fine. I think I'll let this update thing go for now, unless there's something new to add. Have fun!
UPDATE (Monday afternoon): Ugh. Looks like the issues have cropped up on my home server of Aerenal. That's too bad... Of course, I'm at work, but I was hoping to log in tonight. Let's keep the fingers crossed! From what has been said by the folks from Turbine, it looks like the problems are related to "database issues". I'm no techie, so that doesn't mean much to me, but for the computer-savvy out there, maybe it means something. I know that last week's maintenance downtime was related to the database, so maybe whatever they tried to get ready didn't work?!? Anyway, I know there are plenty of folks who had few problems - the "I pulled ____ loot" threads are many on the DDO forums, so obviously lots of folks had a good, trouble-free time. I'll post more when I can - maybe tonight...
UPDATE (Sunday, 11:30pm): Well, looks like some problems were solved, others created. Still plenty of people having issues. For me, I just got back from the recording studio where the band I'm in did an early mix of our second album. Little too late for me to get started gaming tonight - see everyone tomorrow!
UPDATE (Sunday, June 17th, 12:46pm EDT): Looks like there are still some problems happening on some of the servers. Here's the latest message from Community Relations Manager Samera:

UPDATE (Sunday, June 17th, 12:46pm EDT): Looks like there are still some problems happening on some of the servers. Here's the latest message from Community Relations Manager Samera:
"Emergency Server Maintenance - Noon to 2:30pm today:
The following servers will be offline for emergency maintenance from noon until 2:30 pm eastern today:
Riedra, Thelanis, Aundair, Xoriat, Tharask and Khyber.
More information will be posted as it becomes available. Thank you for your patience."
And another:
"We are having some issues with our database - I can't tell you how sorry I am that we are, especially this weekend of all weekends. Over the upcoming week or two we will be doing some serious maintenance to help solve/prevent this from happening again. We are also extending the bonuses for these worlds an extra 24 hours."
And a third:
"I'm sure we'll do another bonus weekend soon, but I don't think it will be for a few weeks. We have some pretty extensive database maintenance coming up and if this weekend has proved anything, it has proven that we need to do that work now, and that we need to do it before we do another bonus weekend. I will definitely advocate for another weekend once all of the maintenance is complete however."
Jerry says - Ouch! It seems like whenever they have these big weekends where lots of players are in the game, and the populations get a huge boost, they have difficulty with lag and other issues. Frustrating, fer sure. Seems like the game needs to be able to handle a bit more capacity on the absolute high-end, population-wise. So far, my home server on Aerenal seems to be going pretty well - I've heard from some friends that things are fine over there, other than a bit more lag in some of the "loot-heavy" quests, but that's nothing too surprising. Here's hoping that Turbine gets things fixed today! I guess the best advice is to play on the servers that aren't experiencing problems - maybe a good time to roll up a character on another server and give it a try!
I suggest Aerenal....
UPDATE (Saturday evening): As I was recording this there were a few "issues" with some of the servers for the Welcome Back Weekend. At 4:32 Eastern, Community Relations Manager Quarion stated:
"The maintenance has been completed earlier than we expected, and the worlds are now coming back online. Again we apologize for the inconvenience.
For the servers that have been affected, your loot and xp weekend has been extended until Tuesday at 9am EDT. We thank you all for your patience. Enjoy the rest of the party!"
However, it does appear that there are still some problems on Khyber as of late Saturday night. Poor Quarion and the game tech folks are having a bit of a long day of it, it seems. Here's hoping that all issues are worked out soon.
Overall, ya know - technical problems do happen. It's unfortunate that it's happening on DDO's big "welcome back" weekend. I know we're all looking forward to playing.
Actually, for me personally, so far it's been great! I haven't been able to play yet this weekend because of real life time commitments, but if I was playing - Aerenal's not been having any problems at all! So, hopefully I can level up and get some cool loot on Aerenal when I log on on Sunday, and then I can switch over to Thelanis and get started on a new character for that server on Monday! Best of both worlds for me!
Sorry for those folks who are having problems when all they want to do is have fun. I think despite some people's frustration, it's still worth giving the poor folks working hard this weekend a thumbs-up - we feel for ya!
A Quick Link:
I mentioned in the show that a DDO Europe player has created a nice blog site to talk about things over there. Drallac's blog can be found HERE.
As always, feel free to comment below or send email to ddocast@gmail.com. Hope everyone is having a fun "Lootivus 2" and a happy Father's Day weekend!
